Round the Walls

In 1972, Chester & District AC was involved in the organisation of the first Round the Walls race. The club merged with Ellesmere Port AC in 1975 to form CEPAC, and merged again in 1998 with Whitby Heath AC to form West Cheshire AC. John Driscoll celebrated the 25th running of this popular race in 1996 by producing ‘A Brief History’, and in 2012 Mike Lamb produced statistics listing those runners who have taken part the most times (see "Stats" below; if you have any information to add or amend, please contact ‘Cross Country Secretary’ via the 'Contact Us' link at the bottom of the page).

Although inclement weather forced a shift of the race from the city walls to variants of a four-lap course around the Roodee in 1981, 1995, 2001, 2004, 2009 and 2010, it has still been run every year on Boxing Day since 1972, except 1976 and 1977, when it moved to December 27th.

Ladies Cross Country

As mentioned in the aforementioned Round the Walls ‘History’, the women's race was withdrawn in 1975 and replaced with cross-country races at Whitby Park, Ellesmere Port, first run on Easter Saturday 17th April 1976. This annual event covered a full programme of age-group races upwards from under-11s. Participants included several future international runners, including a certain Paula Radcliffe in 1985.
